Ruger P-Series. This includes the P85, P89, P90, P94, P95, P97, P345, and any other that I forgot.

They're the American AK-47 of handguns. Period. They're big, clunky, chunky, have fairly loose tolerances, but BOY do they run. Dirty, clean, dry, wet, it doesn't matter. They'll shoot. To boot, they're often found under $400, I've seen them listed used for much less, as manufacturing costs are low. The guts of the gun (barring the slide and extractor) are made of stainless steel, offering enhanced resistance to the elements.

In fact, the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (US Army TACOM) ordered 5,000 KP95D model Rugers, according to Wikipedia. "Tank" is a good nickname for any Ruger P-series pistol. The original P-Series handgun, the P85, has met or exceeded each of the requirements set forth in the XM-9 handgun trials, including exceeding the 20,000-round life expectancy for a service pistol. Subsequent models are only more reliable and better performing.

My current CCW gun is my P89. I have put A LOT of rounds through it, and will show you the gnawed up slide and guide rod as proof. I cannot think of any stoppages off hand that were not due to error on the part of the shooter. I know that if I have to use that handgun to defend myself or my family, it will go "Bang" when I need it to do so.

PS: In case people haven't noticed, I value reliability over everything. My weapons choices reflect that. As a boon, they also tend to be inexpensive as well, mostly because I'm a budget-minded penny pincher. Gimme an AK, Mossberg 500, Mosin-Nagant and Ruger P89 and I'm set.

I'll agree with that, LJ. I owned a P89 a few years ago, I don't ever recall it malfunctioning.
My cousin shot his P95 until the sears were worn out on it, which was probably thousands upon thousands of rounds.
The only reason we don't still own the P89 is that someone came along that wanted it more than we did, and had the cash to persuade us.

Surprised it's not up here yet: the Beretta 92.

Works well for bigger shooters, high capacity, excellent track record for accuracy and reliability, and well within the price range and commonality of the Glocks and SIGs.

"Springfield XD for all the reasons mentioned previously."
That might be my next handgun, that or a S&W M&P9 or some sort of DA .357 revolver.

Could a notation be made of (Serv) (M) (S) be made as part of the XD line? It seems as though the vote goes mostly to the XD, especially to people that only know the XD Service model.

I wish to nominate the Smith and Wesson M&P pistol series.
Even as a weapon I don't own, it's an injustice to leave out the M&P pistols. They are becoming extremely common, in all the common calibers, and many different configurations. Not only that, but range reports and reviews are showing them to be excellent pistols all around. They are the only other major contender to Glock and Springfield at this time.

S&W has M&P revolvers too. J and L frame. Personally, the M&P 360 would be the choice. It's what I would call a "combat sidearm" as far as revolvers go. I would have ate **** to have one in Iraq for mission. o.0

Sharpie, can I mail you some NORMAL capacity mags? Seriously. At least one for you to squirrel away?

My next auto will be either an XD or an M&P.

Again, I'm going to have to disagree, the models are too similar to differentiate between them.

It should at least be changed to include "Line" or "Series" since Glock is less of either than the XD to XDm XDs and XDm 5.25. Just saying. =/

What do you mean?

The Glock series is the Glock series so in turn the XD series should be nominated as the XD series.

I'm still looking at a Sig P226 in .40 Albeit the 9mm is tempting me as well with the lower costs...

Or get the .40, then get a 9mm slide and barrel.

Or vis versa.

Cav, I shoulda looked at the OP, I see what you're saying.

Jim, can you edit the XD nomination to include "series" like the Glock and 1911 lines do?

I see I'm late for the glock nomination, so I will opt for the S&W N frame, preferably in .357 like my Model 28. The added mass is helpful for control for those of us with weak wrists. It is a reliable working gun with the capacity to carry a variety of special purpose rounds in one cylinder. With a 6" barrel, it is an accurate hunter even with iron sights. I like Pachmyer grips on mine, but that's the only mod I've made. Do you find this valuable?

I nominate the CZ-75 as well as other models and copies that use the same frame such as witness, and rock island armory. I have more than a few guns in this frame and everybody who shoots them with me seems to love them. Most of the copies are very reasonably priced and come in multiple calibers such as 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, 10mm, .38 Super, and maybe .357 Sig but I im not sure on that caliber.

So you have a comfortable design with a high capacity and multiple caliber choices that is affordable to the average person. I cant think of anything else the average person is looking for in a sidearm.

I would have to say the S&W M&PL 9mm gets my nomination

for the following reasons.

1. Ambidextrous controls so left or right handed people can use is

2. The replaceable palm swells for different hand sizes that come with it

3. Reasonable accuracy for what it is ok i am a fan but it is not a tack driver either but i can score mid 80's at 25 meters mine which is still standard so maybe some work and a better shooter and you can drive tacks with one

4 most importantly reliability in adverse conditions. Ok i have abused mine to see when it will fail i put 2000 rounds down range without cleaning in one day with all sort of brands including reloads and it never failed apart from a faulty primer that never went off
I have used it in the snow , rain and hot days and it still hold true to its aim and hasn't let me down

downside is i have had people say it feels a bit more snappy on the wrist then other brands but that could be from using 147gr FMJ or its just a bit light so its snappy if you limp wrist it

Hope i didn't go to far of track with explaining why i nominated the M&P 9mm

You know what?

I'm going to nominate the Jericho 941, AKA Baby Desert Eagle.

Heavyweight gun so it soaks up the recoil, good sights, low bore axis and a pretty good trigger (For DA/SA that is)
