My Skill Set: What I have and what I need.

There is a quite a lot of discussion on skills that people here have, God knows it’s a running joke about my cheese making. There are often suggestions on what to learn for newbies but what about us old hats? The idea of the knowledge base started me thinking about what needed skills that are in short supply. In a surivival or post apocalypitc setting these needed skills would have to be rediscovered through trial and error lessening your chances at survival. We have hunting and self-defence pretty much covered but what about other skill? Survival is not merely a question of raw firepower. Here is my intention with this thread I would like you to think of skills that you lack and would need in order to survive and thrive and to list them. This self-inventory activity may help people build a more rounded approach to survival. Just for fun list a few items you know as well. What I lack: What I know: Do you find this valuable?

What I lack:- I know little to nothing about farming or agriculture. - I've seen plenty of demonstrations on how to start fire with primitive methods (Bow drills and other friction methods.), but I am yet to put them into practice. I think I would be hopeless without a modern fire making method. (Fire Steel, matches, lighters.) - Again, I've seen plenty of demonstrations and videos on how to skin an animal, but I have never had the chance to do so, I would definitely love to learn. - I don't have a very large knowledge base of wild edibles, I know a few local edible plants but I would definitely love to know more! __________________________________ What I know: - How to build decent shelters and encampments, depending of course on the terrain I am in. - I love building and constructing things. As most of you know from my profile. ;) - I have quite a solid knowledge of different kinds of fruit and vegetables, as I've been working in a fruit shop for approximately 5 years. (It may help me!) - I know the overall basics of survival and wilderness self reliance. I'm sure there are plenty of other things I could have listed, but I can't seem to think at the present point in time. :P Do you find this valuable? |

what i lack:-i cant light a fire using primitive bush techniques - i am a horrible shot (with a gun) -i am not very good at butchering animals - a proper knife -heaps of other stuff :P --------------- -i can shoot a bow fast and with (alright) accuracy - i have a really great knowledge of bush plants -i can light a fire using only one match (not that great an achievement but still) -i can swim really well -i am an avid spearfisherman -(haha ripping off braydonn's 'i work here' one) i have worked in a fishing/ camping shop for 2 years so i have a really good fishing and spearfishing kit. and thats not the half of it..... 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

What I have:--Good outdoors skills. I live near the Appalachian Trail and disappear as often as I can. I'm not Les Stroud by any means but I know my local area and its plants and animals pretty well. --Competence shooting many different firearms --Good fitness. I run at least 15 miles a week. Hiking all day long with a load is no stranger to me. What I lack: --I've never been hunting and barely know how to fish...though I did skin and cut apart quite a few animals in Anatomy in college. --I am terrible working with my hands, fixing/repairing anything (besides things like my guns or other gear I own personally and use frequently, etc). I can build a shelter and that's pretty much it. Do you find this valuable? |

What I lack (SUCH a long list):- Farming- I can grow nearly anything as it turns out. Book knowledge has proven to be sufficient in this area so far. I'm not large scale farming, but experimenting with different plants, all with great results. However, I can't do much with it afterwards. Grain is hard to harvest, no idea how to mill it, ect. Working on it though. -Livestock- No clue, they will all die, and so will I if my survival depends on theirs. -Gunsmithing- I can't fix 'em, I can modify 'em, I can maintain and shoot them, nothing more. I want to learn, but nobody is willing to let go of their secrets, and I feel that a book knowledge would make me even more irresponsible, fearing that I "think" I can do it with disastrous results. -Mechanical/engineering- I just lack it. I can do simple repairs to most vehicles, but I'm far from an ace mechanic. I can build simple things, but I lack a good bit of knowledge to be able to call myself either of those. -Medical- I'm a competent field medic/First Responder (depending on what stage of my life) I can stitch it, set it, and mend it. Nothing more. I can't do anything really about an illness but treat the symptoms, can't diagnose anything, can't do surgery, ect. Unfortunately I believe this is a knowledge base I will never acquire. -There are a whole host of other things I don't know, but they don't immediately make me wish I knew them- What I DO know (shorter list, ha) - I'm a good shot with most firearms,no means a sniper, but competent. - Construction - Explosives -Hunting -Fishing -Bushcraft -Bowyer - I have extensive knowledge of short term survival, ie: Edible plants, medicinal plants, shelter, fire, ect. A few other less important ones maybe. Do you find this valuable? |

What I know:A god awful lot. Making a list for this is too difficult to do without sounding arrogant. Yeah, even that statement is arrogant. The most important skill I have is recognizing that all knowledge is useful. It may not be needed right away but at some point it will be worthwhile. Couple that with the ability to apply what I have learned in ways that may not even be normal and I get to be well ahead of the game. What I don't have: Automobile mechanics. Change tires, change oil, basic maintenance, these I can do. I can identify many problems. What I don't have is how to fix most of them. Beyond that, I have an irrational phobia of auto grease. Internal surgery. I don't think I'll ever get this covered unless the SHTF and I get to work with a real surgeon. Firearms. I have done OK with a shotgun. I don't have experience with hand guns or rifles. I feel a rifle is very important for survival. Doing any kind of repairs or mods without a manual isn't going to happen. Gun grease is fine : ) Financial management. I am pretty good at making and following a budget. I can even do double entry accounting. Actually getting ahead eludes me. Making investments seems an impossibility. these are a few things, I'm sure I can come up with many more, perhaps as many as the skills I do have. Do you find this valuable? |

What I have:Hunting and tracking skills I shoot expert everytime I qualify (military pop up targets) I can clean and repair basic faults in common weapons. I worked as a surgical tech for a few years so I know about sterility and wound care. I have some basic concepts of surgery but would not put someone else's life in my hands unless no other choice. I can pole and net fish I can do shade tree mechanics as long as it is not an electrical or transmission problem. Carpentry and welding I some bush skills and can navigate well thanks to the military and my country upbringing I can farm and preserve food. I can cook Water purification What I lack: Sewing clothes I assume it is alot like suturing a wound tho. I know some general edible plants in my area but not enough. Trapping (For White76Knight) wood gasifiers! Explosives which I'm not sure if I need Reloading ammo solar energy basics What I plan on learning: Distilling alcohol Making candles and soap Distilling vinegar Spanish since it is another commonly used language in my area Do you find this valuable? |

"Financial management. I am pretty good at making and following a budget. I can even do double entry accounting. Actually getting ahead eludes me. Making investments seems an impossibility. "Is this something that would help post-apoc? I've done pretty well in this area, but it would take some time before financial management would relevant post-apoc. I wouldn't list that as a skill or something you need to know post-apoc. Do you find this valuable? |
