Wait........just another false alarm.

Those stinking drooling shuffling figures are really just your local Frenchmen headed home from work.
But still be careful them Frenchmen are known to eat anything.

I just went to London for my honey moon, not my choice but it was the wife's dream honey moon and I didn't want to go to Egypt due to the all of the upheaval going on at the time. I still want to go see the pyramids and museums though.

The first thing I do is fill a cart with can goods, bottle watter, a couple flash lights and batteries (if I can find any), grab a few large kitchen knifes, trash bags, and some cat litter, and pay for it with my Visa card (to hell with international charges and exchange rates at this point).

Get back to the hotel room, and call the U.S. embassy to see if there is an evacuation possibility.
If there is I would judge if we could get to the embassy in time for an evacuation or not, according to news reports, what's happening on the streets, and our ability to travel.
If there is no evacuation possibility, we would stay put in our room with what we could buy earlier. We would brace the door with chairs, table , and any thing else usable. Fill the tub with water, along with any thing that will hold water and stay put in the hotel room for a few days at least. If the plumbing stops toss the human waste out of a window (trash bags and cat litter).

Why do I not have a BOB? I certainly have an EDC. Even though I left certain items behind due to airline regulations doesn't mean I didn't resupply as soon as I got to the hotel. My recent trip to Disneyland included an immediate foray to pick up a knife. I still wonder what housekeeping thought when they found it next to the Gideon?

What do I do? Well, the Panic is not going to happen instantly upon a single report of zombies. A full blown epidemic is going to take a few days to blossom into widespread concern. Swine flu took weeks before there was even a serious public directive. I've got plenty of time, even if by the time my return flight is scheduled the airports get shut down. Katrina even had a few days for people to take action.

Supposing that that is what I expect to happen then I will begin constructing a BOB. I should be able to put a satisfactory one together in a few days. Assuming I don't speak the native language passably (why I wouldn't is a wonder) my vacation BOB will include a dictionary. I likely have one in the hotel anyway.

How much warning did I have? Are we in an urban, suburban or rural setting? Where in southern France? If I'm in a rural area either I have a bike or rental car. If I'm in the city, there maybe auto share or bike share available with short notice. In a lead up, I would have been buying supplies. I have relatives living in France and Spain. Where exactly am I? Then I can decide on a destination if I know who's closer. Or depending on the hotel, maybe I can bug in depending on what type of building and security I have.

Really, I need a lot more information before I would decide what to do.

Such lack of gratitude towards the country that acted as midwife to bring your nation into the world. Though you guys did pay them back in WW2.

Well, where ARE the zombies? I just saw on the news that there are zombies, but where are they? Are they in the town I'm in? On the other side of the country? My home town? Mexico? Israel? Antarctica?

The same country that was known to support Saddam for his oil.

The same people that treats all others as inferior.
Lack of gratitude? That and lack of respect too.
Great history and military.
Political system that makes ours look sane.

It probably would have cost you less than a dollar to mail it home. How crappy was the knife that you abandoned it instead of giving it a good home?

Or at least not leaving it laying in a hotel room with your fingerprints on it for somebody to stab their wife with.

Oh I'll seriously answer this thread. I’ll assume it’s real and I’ll assume that I am in the maligned France.

What would I do? Find the nearest forest and practice my wood lore. I always have a knife. I pick one up in every country I go to and I fed ex it back home as a souvenir. I just don't feel right without a tool on me so I've got something to start with I won't have to go completely Stone Age.

Well I'll also assume that I am not nude so I'll typical cloths for me: boots, hat, sun glasses, belt, boxers, socks, jeans, T shirt, and heavy over shirt. I'll give myself my usual pocket contents, a pack of cinnamon gum, money, wallet, sesame snap (I'm addicted to them) a half pack of colts and a lighter. I am going to assume that the airline lost my luggage so I can do this scenario otherwise I would just raid my room, grab my suitcase which contains my survival tube meant for travel purposes. I’ll just leave myself with my carryon bag which contains some cloths. I always grab a few bottles of water for myself whenever I stay somewhere because I hate being thirsty especially if I wake up in the middle of the night.
I’ll raid the contents of the room if I could shower cap, washcloth, towels, toilet paper, garbage bags (often in the bottom of the waste baskets), soap, sheets and blankets. If there is a mini bar I’ll empty it.

Now LETS DO THIS!! lol

I'm in France, you say?

I find someone with a rifle and yell at them until they surrender, then I have a rifle and a mule.

I now have some basic survival gear stolen from the hotel in question. I’ll wrap my pilfered booty in the sheets making a crude ruck sack to haul it all in. I would then leave the area by any means possible. If I had a rental car I would Citroen away and use the little French car as a temporary shelter. I’ll assume I am on foot in this instance. No matter what my mode of transportation would be my destination would be the same a heavily wooded area where I could survive. I would be eating whatever wild edible I could scrounge up on my way. I am only at this point armed with a knife and any bludgeon I was able to scavenge along the way. I would in this phase attempt to remain concealed. I would sleep in trees tying myself in place at night with a cord made of towel strips. I would keep an eye out for any bits of useable refuse and add them to my now emptied carryon satchel bag.

When I arrived at the woods I would look for defences, shell craters and scars left over from the First and Second World Wars. If I found an old pillbox I would use this as my shelter. If not I would construct a more primitive concealed shelter in one of the plethora of battle scars in the wilds of France. Once I had located a suitable location with water I would begin my survival strategy. I would be by constructing a series of figure 4 deadfalls to capture small game using my sesame snap as bait. I need the game as more than just food. I would always be looking out for discarded pop, wine and any other bottles and containers or useful material that I could scavenge. I would then begin to construct or reinforce my shelter. If no pillbox was found I would use a battle scar on the terrain and construct a primitive pit house. If I found a pillbox I still would construct a pit house for stashing supplies nearby. Whenever I am in a heavy First or Second World War combat area I look out for decaying ruins of fortifications I just find them interesting.

The pit house would be constructed of dead logs interfiled to form a structure lashed with strips of sheet cloth during construction and whatever other refuse I could locate. Once the frame is completed the pit is covered with loose sticks and woven branches to create a wattle. On these wattle plastic bags, leaves, birch bark, other bark and other similar scraps are placed to waterproof the roof. A layer of soil is placed over the roof and a layer of forest refuse on top of that to conceal the location. A small slit is left open to act as a doorway and it can be blocked with a seemingly fallen log wedged into place from behind. This will provide me with a storage pit and a shelter if no pill box is found.

While I am constructing this shelter I will also be constructing a hunting bow, war club and a spear shaft to act as my hunting/ defence weaponry. I will gather natural cordage materials such as inner bark and root. I will salvage random found feathers for fletching and broken glass to knap into heads. It is sad but useful garbage is everywhere. I will be gathering wild supplies drying them and packing them in my pit in the salvaged refuse containers. I will be stockpiling purified water in the same way. I will construct a primitive notch bed piled with grass to keep me off the ground using the pilfered blanket for warmth. I will be saving the fur of my catches and either making leather and felt or keeping the tanned hides sewn together with sinew or natural cordage. Once I have survived the winter and food is plentiful again I will move on attempting to locate other survivors or better materials for solitary survival.

If I had the contents of a mini bar I would save them as emergency rations and medical supplies. My lighter would provide the initial fire source until I created a fire piston or a fire drill. I would use the colts as tinder, I rarely smoke. I keep a pack on hand because it helps calm and destress me. I maybe smoke a pack or two of colts a year that is all. I would of course be keeping my eye out for zombies, supplies, people, game, useful junk, wild plants, and of course helpful survivors. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

And there we have another one of Shadows interesting and long posts! :) You're become quite renowned for your long well thought out responses and threads Shadow! :)
I am also quite interested in your survival tube! Please share the details!

@Soviet
Oh also, I'm not sure if you remember this or not (Your kidnappers hit you in the back of a head, so your memory might be a little hazy.) but right before you were kidnapped a famous celebrity adopted you, your new father is Liam Neeson. I suggest you just sit tight and wait for him to rampage through the country trying to find you.

Yup I have my survival tube for travel. It is for times when I can’t take my stuff with me due to airline regulations or local laws. The tube itself is made out of a thick clear vinyl and plastic to allow it to be used to haul water. It is clear to allow for airport security to check it over if they please. The contents of the tube are mainly a few lightweight items I can stash in my bag to aid in survival. It contains both permanent and non-permanent items. The non- permanent Items are things I buy when I arrive to deal with airline regulations or Items which need to be changed for different regions. A map of say Mexico wouldn't be all that useful in France lol. All the items in the permanent section are light weight and compact to minimize lost cargo capacity due to weight regulations.

Permanent Items:

1 small spool of fishing line
1 length of cord (enough for 2 bow strings)
1 compact fire piston
1 collapsible water bottle
1 small pocket first aid kit
1 polished piece of obsidian
1 length of vinyl hose
1 emergency Mylar blanket
1 plastic soap container
1 large clear contractor’s trash bag
1 piece of canvas 30 x 30 cm
1 small compass
1 nylon sack with drawstrings

Non- permanent items:

Local map
List of local stores names and adresses so I can buy needed items - self made
Local wild edibles chart with detailed images - self made
Locally purchased small food ration
Locally purchased or sourced hand sanitizer and soap
Locally purchased or sourced sewing kit
Locally purchased or sourced pencil and note pad
Locally purchased antibiotic cream
Locally purchased fishing hooks
Locally purchased duct tape
Locally purchased knife

The lions share of this is available at the airport itself lol the airport stores may be over priced but at least I know I can read the lables lol.
