Survival of the Beard
Aug 18 2012, 7:42 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 18 2012, 7:45 PM EDT
"You should be women, and yet your beards forbid me to interpret that you are so" – Banquo, to the witches, in Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Recently I've had some nice compliments on my beard. I've also been enjoying Dave Canterbury's "Journal of the Yurt" series where he is sporting a nice full beard. Have you noticed that beards are almost part and parcel with survival mentality?

My office manager is always on me to trim my beard to a "stylish" stubble. My boss shaves cleanly. They both seem to have an idea that less facial hair is better for sales. Incidentally I tend to have more sales than my boss. I think that has more to do with presentation than appearance.

There seems to be a clean dividing line about whether one should have a beard or not. To beard or not to beard has surfaced in many threads here on ZSDW as well. There does seem to be a tendency among survivalists and preppers to wear a beard.

Beards have a long history. In some cultures having a beard was The style has a certain amount of communication in it. I would like to know what you think a beard says. If you are a woman, I would also like to know (apart from what a beard communicates) if you find one attractive.

People mistake me for someone considerably older when I grow out the aul facewarmer..

It's actually quite disturbing.

I think a beard shows experience and gruffness but it also reminds me of Santa Clause so I guess it is opinionated. 0  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I am almost always beard-laden. To be honest, I don't like the way that I look without one. It's kinda amusing though that I like long hair on my face but short hair on my head... 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Companies have funded research/studies on what the majority of people like more and tend to feel more comfortable with.
Less facial hair, less tattoos, less piercings, shorter hair, and nicer clothes continually get better responses.
So with skills, personalities, and everything else equal. The person with less facial hair has better odds of making more sales.

That is why he wants yoy with less beard.

Now I don't know where you're at but over 70% of people I live and work around are clean shaven. The most of the facial hair types have GTs.

When I'm clean shaven I get carded at the movies, with full face warmer I buy beer no I.D. needed (mid 20s here). I don't go full mountain man, but I rock the beard 90% of the time...I do always shave for interviews though.

But in a survival sense, I'm not going to waste time/energy/resources on shaving unless I just HAVE to.

Edit: I do always shave at the start of the quest for Lord Stanely.'s Cup. Playoff beards are a serious matter.

I've had a goat for years and it would pain me to the core to have to shave it off. I've had it for longer then I've had some friends LOL I would try to keep it trimmed up. But it wouldn't be high on my list. If i had to I'd go full grizzly adams.

Oh forgot to mention me.
From about 15-34 I always had a mustache.
Then shaved for my wife.
Now in the summer I shave twice a week or more and keep a military cut.
In winter I grow a GT to a full facial and let my hair grow out.

Used to keep my head shaved, always have had a GT, used to keep the goat long enough to braid...lol, now i've grown my hair out long, it's about shoulder length now and the goat is a little shorter, in winter I let the full beard grow in.

I used to have long hair. Obviously short while serving. But otherwise it was usually middle of back long in a pony tail. Some times braided.
Only for a few months did I shave the head. Mama and the kids thought I looked like a thug/skin head.
But I'm going bald and I hate bald guys with a pony tail and or long hair. Looks like a pathetic attempt at staying young. lol
But thats me

I had long hair my whole life, until I became a contractor, I kept it to the skin for 10 years...now I'm just lashing out...lol, i'll probably cut it short again, I'm not bald but it seems I'm thinning out a bit on top, i'll shave it again before it gets too thin...eff'ing old age sucks
