Zombies and Guns
Sep 3 2012, 2:15 PM EDT
Unimaginative title I know but I just experienced a tragedy here so bite me.So I was on Youtube discussion the prolific rise (lol) of the zombie theme for guns, targets, scenarios, and ammunition. Do you all think that the introduction of zombies into mainstream firearm circle is good thing or a bad thing? Has the impact been positive, negative, or mixed? The person I am speaking with thinks that it makes things look childish and gives anti-gun groups rocks (cause they use slingshots! ^_^) to use against us because it makes us look childish. Is this stance valid or is it more nuanced like I believe it is? Discuss. Do you find this valuable? |

My experiences have been mixed. So far it's been a fun way to open up dialogue about guns with people that otherwise wouldn't have been interested. It's opened up conversations for prepping and personal safety/security and convinced a few of my friends to get into guns. The negative is that I think there's a lot of companies that are milking this "zombie apocalypse" thing to an infuriating degree. I've seen a ton of companies selling useless @$ products that are nothing but a gimmick, but they're selling them as serious tools of survival. The other negative would be that some people view it as a method to try and write off preppers and gun owners as loons. It doesn't matter that none of us believe that zombies are coming, or crap like that, the fun conversation is turned into ammo to write us off. Do you find this valuable? |

Painting something lime green and stamping "zombie" on it doesn't appeal to me anymore. When they first starting doing it I thought it was kinda neat and I've bought a few boxes of Horandy zombie ammo and put it away because I think it'll be collectable someday.I've also bought a lot of the Darkotic targets and put them away. I've got one of each hanging in the man-cave section of our pole barn. Like I say, it was kinda cool when they started with the zombie themed stuff but it got over-done pretty much like anything that sells. Kind of like the early nineties when all the hair bands died. Everyone was sick of metal and cookie cutter rock bands with teased up hair and the same predictable ballads on every album. Love the title of this thread very well thought out and origional. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

There are so many firearms owners who seriously B!TCH about zombie survival firearms, knives and accessories. I only whine when people bring out crap. Either bad quality, ugly or just not well thought out. But for products that work, good quality and look cool, I like them. Do you find this valuable? |

From the products I've seen, I'd say that the zombie themed gear, ammo, and targets aren't aimed at the mainstream shooting community that you mentioned. I think they come off as more for those who are into gimmicks and less serious about shooting or survival. To be honest, I believe that I would have trouble taking someone who used those products seriously. maybe its just an ingrained bias after years of serious shooting and outdoor hobbies, but people who are interesting in zombie themed products make the serious shooters, hikers, campers, etc. look childish Do you find this valuable? |

I think it adds a fun aspect- something new. I did my first firearm course and bought my first moss590 because of an interest in zombie fiction. I can honestly say my reasons for firearm ownership and knowledge of them has vastly increased. Had it not been for zeds would I have ever picked up the interest? Maybe, maybe not. But its a fun way to get into something new. To answer the question though, id say mixed, as things usually are. When you start combining the words "gun" "fun" "fiction" and other stuff like that, people tend to think youre a wee bit unfit for a boom stick. Do you find this valuable? |

Like many here, I get into the whole "If life turned into a zombie movie" thing. Doesn't bother me that companies buy into that, any more than the movie industry doing it. I do get a weird feeling, though, when I'm looking at otherwise serious discussions (elsewhere on the net) and people mention zombies as if they're a real threat. I think that sometimes the Z word gets used when people want to talk about shooting other people, but are trying to make it digestible for others. And let's face it, there's undeniably a small number of preppers out there who are expecting the end of the world and welcome it because it'll give 'em a chance to rule with (gun)fire.

For me, zombies are a guilty pleasure, because they let you be as violent as you want without moral consequences. Shoot them in the knee, shoot them in the face, stomp their head into the curb - you never have a moral question raised.Sure, there is always the "friend who goes zed" that you have to shoot after a hidden bite, but that just reminds you that this is an allegory and that the zombies you will have to watch out for will be starved, crazed, and dangerous refugees. Not to mention, zombies create fun mental games (what would I do in that situation . . . ) and allow for intersurval dramas to be played out on something other than a deserted island (I got tired of "Lost" back when they still called it "Gilligan's Island"). Still, something lime green and toy-like doesn't appeal to me. I'm an old school survivalist who turned prepper back when I became secure enough in life to buy property and begin stockpiling (a natural evolution between young men and old in survivalism). I'm not sure it hurts anything. Survivalism (back to earth, simple living, etc etc) goes through fads like raising backyard chickens and bell-bottom pants. The zed thing will cool over time, as the kids find something else cool to play with. Most of us who have been here awhile will still be around. Do you find this valuable? |

People that whine about this usually whine about lots of things. If I always worried what the whiners cried about I wouldn't have guns. Remember all the tears over pink guns? I even heard people whine about camo guns. Made us look like militia wannabe nut jobs, they said. At least this one is so obviously tongue in cheek they look pathetic. I say let them whine about this. It keeps them off of serious shooting sport stuff. Just carry a zombie hankie so they can wipe their snotty nose. lol Do you find this valuable? |

"And if for some reason their whining made you give up guns...THEN they would whine about your obviously " Military grade ASSAULT Knives" !!!!!It's sad but true. There are even fellow hunters and shooters that also whine. Don't need a high capacity magazine for hunting. Don't need a 50cal Barrett for hunting. Don't need ARs and AKs for hunting. Ect Ect They will never be satisfied. And if a hunter/shooter is embarrassed by zombie themed items. They are already embarrassed about hunting/shooting. Do you find this valuable? |

But seriously, at first I thought Zombie Max ammo was kind of cool so I bought a box...and the shirt. But the hole Ruger LCP zombie slayer is such a joke, IMO it makes shooters look like children.
