there's a book called The Proper Care and Feeding of Zombies that explains how rabies and many other diseases can mutate into a form of so called "zombieism" its a pretty good read is actually written very professionally, a lot of the theories it has are quite convincing and really show you how close we could be to zombies. 6  out of 6 found this valuable. "Do you think this could actually happen though?"
Honestly? Yes.
Like I said all it takes is for a virus to mutate in a certain way. Lets take rabies for example, all it takes for this virus to be "zombie like" is for it to mutate so it effects the frontal lobe (front of the brain in case you didn't know) now this virus is common in animals in animals like badgers but considerable numbers of people in Africa still contract the virus to this day. So all it takes is for it to mutate and then be contracted for a human, also remember that the period it takes for any noticeable symptoms to appear mostly range from 2 days to a week and you could travel every continent, at a push, within week. And as rabies can easily be contracted if you haven't had your shots then the whole world could be infected within a week.

It depends how you define a zombie.
If you take the classic meaning, as the risen undead, then that is scientifically impossible. Cell necrosis cannot be reversed.

However, there are a large number of disorders, diseases, viruses, parasites and fungi which are capable of altering the behavior of the host body. It only takes an evolutionary step for one of these threats to be able to turn a human into a violent, rage-filled idiot.
Say it's a parasite which reproduces particularly well in decomposing flesh. It could make its host suicidal, as several parasites do with animals and insects.

There are countless things which affect the human brain into becoming violent. A brain tumor, schizophrenia, BPD, hallucinations, delusions. All can be triggered by external causes.

Smaller organisms evolve much faster than we humans. I think this gives them the upper hand in the war.

What I think about zombies is really of little importance to you. The real question is whether you believe it can happen. Sam, you appear to be fixated on the idea of zombies. There are many other disasters that have a high probability of happening. How are you prepared for any of them? It does not matter if we are preparing for zombies because doing so makes one prepared for the other real life situations.

When Sandy hit the Eastern US do you think anyone cared about zombies? Unlikely, but they sure would have been happy to have a few days of food stored. Hoping for some stored seeds and actually having them is what matters. Talking about fiction vs reality doesn't matter. Taking some form of action before the need arises is what counts.

PS. My comments are directed at the OP this time since this question is well discussed in several other threads. Doing a search for these threads is nigh on impossible because of the plethora of responses. However, these pages http://www.zombiesurvivalwiki.com/page/Zombie+Science and the threads attending them are a good start.

Never say never. We could get swarmed with twilight vamps for all we know.

If it did happen though, I could see it as some kind of wide spread human/rabies type thing.

OT, but Jesse, are you giving birth to a dog in that picture?

A dog with giant ears that you are trying to teach how to fly Dumbo style?

In which case, there might be zombies - since I've always said that it is more likley for a giant elephant dog to fly out of myass than for zed to show up.

So, thank you Jesse for bringing about the doom of man.

Unless, of course, that is just good ole fashionedbeastiality. In which case, the dog's face is priceless.

Back to the OP, zed are somewhere inbetween statistically impossible and actually impossible.

That said, if shipping shuts down, how long would it be before the shuffling masses of starved humanity consumes itself? If I am ready for zed, then I am ready to be on my own with humanity hungerly banging down my door - and there are hundreds of things that could cause that kind of societyal breakdown.

Still, it is more fun to talk about knocking the brains out of rotten corpses hoofing it around than to think about putting some through a group of refugees - many of whom are women and children.

Possability, depending on what would qualify as a Zombie, Maybe.
Probability of it happening, highly unlikely.

I know that it is of little/no importance to me but I was just thinking if it were to happen it would take the world by storm, nobody would expect it, nobody would be prepared because right now they dismiss it as Bullsh*t. I only asked the question because a friend of my big brother wants to make a amateur/indie zombie film and thus I joined this site for info. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

No. I think killer robots or space invaders are more probable. We are well on our way to AI, and like most, I don't believe that we're alone out here...

Of course, all of it is pretty far-fetched.

Out of the billions of planets, there has to be another with life on it, so that is not that far fetched when you think about it. Although we may never find them and they might not be hostile, I don't believe we are alone out here either 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

There does not "have to be" life out there. That is a fallacy in probability.

Right now, there is only one planet that has life (this one).

Thus, there are two options: there is other life in space or we are unique.

If we are unique - then it does not matter how many billions of starts their are, unique means one.

If we are not unique, then life becomes an issue of rairity. If life is a one in a million shot, then the universe is teaming with life. If it is a one in ten trillion chance, then we might be it (or the only it in the universe at this given moment.

Also, any species that can travel the stars is not going to be interested in our planet for the surface - they will more likely be interested in the planet itself as raw materials (if you are traveling among the stars you are already past the point where harvesting planets is a reasonable endevour).

Considering that the Earth is made of rather common stuff as well as us having life, any such species might just harvest the other planets around us leaving Earth as a "preserve" for our life.

We also assume aliens will always be more advanced. We may end up being the alien invaders someday...wouldn't that be a trip...

I've always wondered too if maybe some peaceful aliens have just declined to visit or interact with Earth. 40 years ago we were still having racial riots. My dad was in WV a few weeks ago and had people driving by screaming "f*ck you ch*nk. We still debate religious preferences, sexual preferences, political preferences, yada yada. Can you imagine how insane people would get if little green men landed and tried to integrate with our species?
