So we speak of clearing buildings but considering how wasteful it would be to clear a building of roaches in the middle of roach central it's only practical to clear the area first. How would this be done? I assume streets would get it first but then how to clear each building if the one next to it could be loaded? What methods could be used to accomplish this with minimal risk? How would terrain impact this? Weather? How about manpower? Discuss. Do you find this valuable?

I'm just putting this out there as a no nonsense situation not really a serious discussion piece.Wait till Winter comes and it's cold enough for snow to build up so any walkers are slow due to the cold and/or held up by the snow. If your lucky enough to have/find an M2 and plenty of ammunition, mount it on a vehicle and place that vehicle on a vantage point. Lure them into an open area below the vantage point and lay waste. Or lure them into a narrow passage and place your M2 armed vehicle at one end of the passage. Laying waste to them as you spray swarms of 50g death down range. Do you find this valuable? |

As with any clearing or quarantine, you need to start with a secure perimeter. When extending your BOL that means you either: Move the existing perimeter out; or You create a second perimeter attached to the first, clear the inside of the second perimeter, then remove the internal wall between the two. Something similar would need to be done for a town or city that you intended to clear. A safe zone that you know you can retreat to and defend, and that you can extend as you work your way round. Depending on terrain, manpower and resources this might be as small as one building, or as large as one city block. For cities, the resources for barricades should be abundant and varied. Shopping trolleys (carts for the Yanks) chained together are the smaller version of cars lined up end to end. The wheels on both mean that you shouldn't have as much of an issue moving the barricades as you would if oyu used concrete blocks or sandbags. Do you find this valuable? |

One needs to establish a hierarchy of needs. We are pretty familiar with Maslow's but what I am proposing here is one to be applied to scavenging as well as territory. Instead of clearing every building in a block one would identify which ones hold the things most needed. They get cleared first with others merely secured. A marking system would be needed to prevent wasted effort as time goes on. Once territory is claimed, whether it be a block or a field, then a systematic clearing of non-target buildings can be done. Eventually every resource in the area can be harvested, but one must avoid a total demolition at the cost of other time sensitive projects. . Do you find this valuable? |

First would come scouting - a team, mechanically mobile if possible, to get the lay of the area. We should know where everything is - not like a town moves in the apoc, but you need to know if their are holdouts, how many zed are about, and the condition of the buildings that are your primary goals.Second, unless you are simply expanding your peremeter to absorb another home, you are dealing with clearing an uncontrolled area. I perfer to do that from absolute safety. Putting shooters up on buildings (and have them haul up their ladders with them), with a few days supply, plenty of ammo, and a tent/tarp. For the next few days, their job is to rotate sniping out the streets. This should also draw out any that are likely to come. Stage three, with the streets clear, individual buildings can be worked - much like Zee-man said, in order of need. This would best be done with an entry team to clear the building then defend the truck/cart, a scavange team to gather and load up the goods, and the snipers keeping watch. Once a few buildings had been cleared and cleaned out, you collect the snipers and everyone returns to base to work on "digesting" the supplies gathered and takes a day off for rest. This plan onley works in sertain settings but i beleave this is worth mentioning. This is how i would clear the town of Sombeek of zombies as this is the closest to my BOL.Becouse my lack of manpower and fast firing weapons, When and onley when i need to clear the town, i would make a sh!tload of noise at the edge, drawing the zombie basterds to me. Now i've got there attention i would lead this sizable undead parade trough the marshlands. I've gotten stuck in the quiksand once and i'm pretty sure if i didn't act the way i did i would have still been there in that gunk right now. Smelled like **** and petrol for a week two. Zombies lack the inteligence to stay on the narrow path, neighter they have the selfawareness to notice they're slowly sinking into the mud, this should be an undead death-trap. straglers can be finished off by weapon fire. The town will still be ridled with undead, stuck inside buildings, attics, basements, sheds, etc. but it will be at least a bit safer to execute a thorough mop-up. Witch others will likley and happily discribe in my place. Do you find this valuable? |
