22 caliber rifle
Oct 3 2007, 8:12 AM EDT
the person who suggested a 22 caliber rifle is correct about finding ammo. but the premise that a 22 caliber rifle can do enough damage is shakey at best.in living humans you must damage the part of the brain just above the spinal cord. the rest of the brain is not needed for the body to move its arms and legs. most of the brain above this area is used to decide were to go and what to do. to kill a zombie instantly you need to damage the base of the brain. the only reason a bullet will stop a zombie is that when a bullet hits human flesh it causes a shockwave that damage the flesh surrounding the bullet path this shockwave damages the base of the brain allowing the zombie to be stoped instantly. you would spend too much time aiming with a 22 rifle because the damage it causes is so small. when dealing with zombies you need to spend the least amount of time aiming 14 out of 28 found this valuable. Well said! Thanks for enlightening us on the actual area of damage you are looking to inflict. I'm guessing very few of us really have thought further than "destroy the brain!"Thanks Again! 4 out of 10 found this valuable. Do you? |

why arnet crosbows in the firearms section, the bolts are renewable, also many crossbows can be used to fire other items, making your own stakes to fire may not be to difficult with a knife again it's all retreivable

"the person who suggested a 22 caliber rifle is correct about finding ammo. but the premise that a 22 caliber rifle can do enough damage is shakey at best.True a .22 won't take down most people, but there are reports of a .22 ricocheting inside the brain of a zombie, turning the brain to liquid. Very dead zombie. A lightweight .22 (like a youth hunting rifle) can be great because ammo is cheap, available everywhere, and light (you can carry 15 .22 rounds or 2 .50s for the same weight and space). True aiming takes some time, which is why any zombie within your effective kill radius should be dispatched immediately, you have to keep them from getting too close. And that's why you carry your back up .45, and your tactical knife. Don't you? Great book: Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. World War Z is also great. 10 out of 12 found this valuable. Do you? |

my first post but i am a reasonable experienced marksman and hunter i can easilyy understand why you might think the 22 wouldnt be effective but on the contrary 85% of the murders involving guns in the U.S occur with the lowly .22 LR but if you atre looking to carry only 1 firearm i would recomend a large caliber pistol carbine in 38spcl all the way up to 454cassul the accuracy should not be an issue with any of the rifles if they have decent parts and are in good condition but back to 22 rifles with practice i see no reason about why a zombie would be easily taken out do to the fact everyone quickly gets comfortable with low recoil weapons and in a "combat" situation its far more important to be comfortable with your weapon than to use what everyone else says would work best if you are using somthing you arent comfy usin you will be less likely to actually use your means of self defense

People seem to forget (or just don't know) that .22 doesn't mean .22 long rife which is the rimfire case that most people think of when considering a .22. In no particular order, the 22 magnum, 220 swift, 222, 22 hornet, 22-250, and .223 are all rounds which use a .22 bullet and are more than capable of destroying a brain at 100-500 yards depending on the round used(see my revisions to the .22 section). I'll also be adding information on the terminal ballistics of the rimfire .22 rounds to address the ops concerns of brain damage when i get some free time.

.22 hollow points have been an assassin round for years, and most fatal shots were headshots within the range of 50yd, which is plenty distance in dispatching a zombie.

I would pick a 22 caliber rifle as a sniper rifle, its light, inexpensive and readily available, also I have owned a 22 rifle most of my life and with my rifle I can hit a gallon jug at 50 yards every time, when the infestation breaks out, break out the 22 rifle, 10 boxes of ammo and I'm ready baby, also if you have the time and are out of reach with a scope you could get a lot of Z's. (A little Zombie humor :-))

The damage on another bullet to the brain would not be much better as even a .45 is still less than half an inch wide, almost any bullet will suffice to a headshot. Almostt any caliber is sufficient for a headshot, while it is possible that some .22's will not penetrate the ability to get off a seond shot with almost any .22 weapon is easy.

I would have thought that as firearms a person should have a .22 rifle with a scope plus any pistol

And a well aimed shot can easily cause enough damage to kill a person. choosing a caliber like 5.56 nato drastically increases your effective range and killing potential, at the cost of weight. .22LR are rim-fire rounds, they suffer from misfire problems, and cannot be reloaded. However their cost, availability, and weight do help make them a viable option. 2 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

there are many conversion kits and special 'brass' floatin around the firearm market. imagine bein able to fire 3 round bursts from your prized MP5 or AR15 without the gnawin anxiety of runnin low on ammunition. if you have the money and are willin to give up a higher caliber, i'd suggest investin in a conversion kit. i think the .22 caliber is a great round, not just for dispatchin zombies, but for survival as well. its small and quiet and can kill a deer when shot behind the ear.

"why arnet crosbows in the firearms section, the bolts are renewable, also many crossbows can be used to fire other items, making your own stakes to fire may not be to difficult with a knife again it's all retreivable"Arrow/bolt + bone/skull = nonreusable arrow/bolt. Also arrows don't cause shrapnel or mushroom on impact, forcing a more accurate kill shot. For a heart shot on an animal, bows are nice because they don't have to fight bone, a head shot is going to be much much less reliable. Do you find this valuable? |

i agree that the Modula is going to be your best target from the front that is a nose shot and to be honest i am surprised it is talked about more for any kinda of fire arm situation... example hostage situation guy has gun to ladies head you shot him and kill him but it was a shot to the forehead and the mashed brain send pulse threw the Modula contorting the body and potentiality firing the pistol pointed at her head killing her. now i am not sure if a 22lr is not enough for this but i think the real problem is the reliability and a center fire round i think would be the best idea even if it is 22 hornet, 5.7x28 or .223 i think five seven is were its at but i dont know about post Apoc availability

well with the miss fire of the .22 it depends on the gun some like difrent ammo then others. some like the cheap stuff and some like the brand name stuff it depends. you got to know your rifle if u know it and like said befor comfy with it then well use it. i think it would do the job to kill a z. any gun can kill any thing and i would not want to go with a sim auto because its ben proven that auto is not that acreat it dosent matter how small or how big the bullet is go with the bolt. it saves on ammo you can place shots better and faster and you can hit your target more often. my brother and his friend did a test a wile ago with a savege mk 2 .22lr. him and his friend molded some clay into a real size skull and stuck it into a manican head they placed it about 260 yards out the gun had a scope on it. my brother shot one shot hit it dead center of the forhead with a hollow point it whent threw the for head and out the back of the head in like 3 difrent spots. i sean the head and wow if that was a real person they would be gone. the jell that was in the clay skull was poring out the three holes. so ya i think a .22lr would do the job. for got to say that the clay was about the same thick ness of a real one.
