I think it was very well done. Brilliant even. I like how he went about it every step of the way. I like that the dead cannot be reanimated as Solanum (Z-Virus) does not creat life but changes it. (though they are pretty much dead since they rot and all) Again just very well done Im on my 4th reading of it and my 3rd of WWZ. I hope they dont screw up the movie of WWZ 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I agree that it was great. I read it when it first came out and it was like a breath of fresh air for all my zombie thinking. Someone who obviously thinks about this as much as we do. Go Max! 2  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

For the most part i really liked the book, especially some of the more creative on the attack sections. The one criticism i have is that some of his supply/weapon lists are a little wonky. Id have to look them up to give specifics but i remember reading some of them and thinking "WTF is this guy on". 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Exactly. Avoid shotguns? Has this guy ever fired a weapon? Other than that, it was a great book.

What he was trying to say is that shotguns were great at short range but that you should never even be NEAR a zombie I personally prefer Semi-automatic rifles, although the section on weopons is off by alot, thats why I read the U.S army manuals :) 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I just finished the book and loved it. I also favor his "Solanum" virus theory, in general.
That said, I do have issues with some of the hypotheses put forth in the book.
For one, I know of no complex organism that can be oxygen dependent. Furthermore, in order for a virus-mutated brain to be capable of reanimating dead tissue, it must be capable of firing electrical impulses down through the nervous system and into the muscle tissue, causing it to contract. This involves a number of subsequent chemical reactions that don't quite mesh with his "completely dried up" theory. I'm no expert on Kinesiology, but something smells wrong here (pardon the pun). I also sincerely doubt that the normal ..er.. " life span" of a zombie would be anywhere near 5 years, given the above. The muscle tissue would rip itself apart long before that, immobilzing the Z-man in a much shorter amount of time.

He also contradicts himself at least once; nothing major, but; in the first half of the book, he says fire has no effect on zombies as they do not feel pain and do not feel fear.
Yet, in the latter half, he suggests using fire to "herd" the zombies into a tight spot to take them out with rifles. Huh? If they don't fear fire, you won't be able to "herd" them with it. Oops.

I wish we could do polls on this wiki. I'd love to do a poll to see how many of us generally agree with Brooks and how many think he's way off the mark., or at least discuss the various individual hypotheses introduced in his book. I still think it's the best (only?) book of it's kind.

It is a good read. He brings up several things I never would have though of, underwater menace. I don't like the point he makes about all modern western cultures are stupid and everyone else is going to do better then us. I think he knows nothing of guns. Typical of a guy who never owned one let alone fired one. He read a book or two about them and that was about it. I could go into detail but that would waste too much time. But as far as ideas about what to do and what to be careful of, not too bad. Do you find this valuable?

To expand upon the above statement...

Brooks only takes into account one type of zombie, and that is the necrotic shambler of Romero notoriety. From an medical basis this is somewhat impossible. Dead tissue can't support motor neurons, in turn rendering them unable to move at all. The entire book is based upon the concept of a partially decomposed corpse of limited dexterity and motor skills. This should be of particular concern for defensive fortifications and offensive tactics stated in the book.

Also, the debate rages on, but Brooks gives far too much credit to the AK and not enough to the M16. It appears his knowledge of the weapon system is limited to Vietnam documentaries and testimonies. As far as I know, the M16 can be used as a melee weapon, as well as fire without jamming provided proper maintenance is performed.

There's a reason the book is in the humor section. One has to read between the lines in order to fully grasp why this is the case. Think about it, how many suburban domiciles have concrete, 6ft high walls? Better question, how many of us are going to take every one of his suggestions on how to properly prepare your home for Z-Day? How many of us even have the money?

Conclusion: Read it for a bedtime story and not as a serious guide.

Overall I thought it was an alright book. Yes, the weapons and gear parts would have been a little or maybe alot better. But over all I'd say its a fun read, however maybe i just missed something but he never seems to go into the concept of raiders or other harmful indaviduals.
If I'm wrong on that don't be afraid to let me know.
