We are going to buy a Mossberg 590 soon,Probably within 3 weeks. I just want some last minute reviews and critiques of the shotgun.
I'm deciding whether to use the Mossberg,or the Auto-5 shotgun for deer hunting. I will probably be using 2.75 inch slug ammunition for hunting.

This may ramble a bit, but I have a question to ask.
In a TEOTWAWKI scenario, I've been daydreaming about different loads to carry, and I'm currently tossing up whether a pistol calibre carbine accompanying a bolt action rifle might work as well (or better) than a shortish barrelled semi auto rifle. The weapons I've been thinking of specifically aren't really important, but the idea was Keltec Sub-2000 + Ruger Gunsite Scout vs. Keltec RFB by itself. As I said, doesn't matter, you could use any similar combination. So, Pros of the two guns: Two weapons means more reliability. One failure, just sling it for now and bring the other one into play. Also, bolt guns are very, very reliable, and will usually eat whatever ammo you feed them. Also, having the second weapon means you can hand it to someone else if necessary, giving more firepower. So more flexibility. Cons: More weight than the single gun option, although not a lot, and this may well be offset by the fact that you can carry more carbine ammo and less rifle ammo, and still have the same number of rounds available. Carrying and ergonomics. Switching guns isn't as easy as our computer games would have us believe. Nor is carrying two long arms. On top of that is the mental switch from one weapon to the other. So I guess the question is: Which way would you go? Two guns or one? Can one battle rifle do the job of two different guns? Assume you're on foot for this discussion.

This tread is dedicated to share anything you want about ghillie suits.
Do you have or use one? Do you want to share your opinion on implementing them? Maybe you want some tips on making one, this tread could help with that aswell. I made 3 sets so far, all in woodland camo with pre-made strings and sand-bag rags. -a ghillie-cloack with leg-pieces -a smaller back-pack version - and a full suit, still making finishing touches on this one.

While talking to another member who recently purchased some ground, I asked them if they were going to start raising crops or livestock. I got an answer that I wasn't really expecting. They said that wasn't anything they were interested in and that job would be reserved for their serfs.
My initial reaction was to be offended. My strength as a prepper in my eyes is my ability to grow my own crops. It's a bigger hobby for me than firearms and it's something I'm very proud of. In a ever evolving society there are fewer and fewer people interested in gardening. This did however open my eyes to a possibility. Post apoc a smart raider wouldn't kill farmers, he'd use them. Human beings have always found ways to use others, an apocalypse wouldn't change that, it'd just make it more likely.

Well this thread is for the dreamers out there, but if you could have one military issed firearm with no strings attached what would it be? You can have anything that is or was issued in your countries military.
I for one would love to have a MK 46 light machine gun, and about 20,000 rounds of 5.56 link. I would then have to go find a town of praire dogs and let fly.

So, I've found this book online a while ago, named "Ballistic Strikes Science", which ddescribes how to maximize the efficiency of a punch, and reduce its effect in you.
http://pt.scribd.com/doc/148116983/Ballistic-Striking-Science-1 The main focus of the book is telling you to relax your arm, using its weight (around 7 Kg) to deliver the maximum damage, while reducing the shockwave to you (it goes out through the elbow). I actually tried a few bits of this book with a schoolmate, and it (at least apparently) worked. What do you think? Is it useful? Effective? Yours in survival, wkwkwkwk1

Ever done anything painfully stupid, that looking back, you think to yourself, "OMG, I am so dumb!" and end up screwing the undead pooch?
About an hour ago, I was "repairing" a dried out pen (one of those desk-mounted pens, attached with a beaded chain so that nobody walks off with it or throws it at you) with my knife and stuck the blade into my left index finger. I don't mean minor cut, I mean stab, deep, into my fingertip. Stupid LJ, stupid knife, stupid ink pen, stupid blood (I hope my knife is clean....) Skipping the details (I used Celox), I don't think I need stitches. Yay! Have any of you done anything like this? If not, do you know anyone else as dumb as LJ? Please, stories are great!

It's Monday, June 3rd, 2013. You've just gotten back from (or otherwise completed) your lunch break when the first whispers of outbreak are heard. "Did you hear about so-and-so?" one person says. "Yeah, and the guy's.... face bitten..." another replies. Other folks haven't been returning from their breaks. Some have gone home early "because they just don't feel well." Over the span of the next hour, you begin hearing emergency vehicles along the roads, in almost alarming frequency.
News reports indicate that it is theorized that some sort of viral contagion, possibly bio-terrorism, has been released and is making people ill. It is advised that you stay indoors until further notice. Streaming video shows scenes of panic and chaos. In the next ten or fifteen minutes, your area (city, town, county) is under strict "shelter-in-place" lockdown orders. Those seen outside will be detained by law enforcement officials. For those of you who work primarily outdoors or in a vehicle, you are beginning to feel ill. At this point, it is only flu-like symptoms and muscle soreness. Those who work indoors, there's an unsettling feeling in your stomach. Everyone's beginning to have spotty cellphone reception. How do you proceed for the next two hours? **Please be as specific as possible, but keep your reply to 2000 characters and one post. Do not reply to one another. It will affect the smoothness of this scenario.**

Alright cheapskates, Paramount and Regal Entertainment are going to let you spend $50 bucks on a mega ticket to go see World War Z!!! lol
http://www.nbcnews.com/entertainment/world-war-z-mega-ticket-package-sell-50-select-cities-6C10321762 For $50, fans in five U.S. cities will screen the film two days prior to its official release and receive an HD digital copy of the film when it becomes available. The package also includes one small popcorn, a pair of custom RealD 3-D glasses and one official full-size, limited-edition movie poster. The closest one to me is Philly. And since we're talking about silly purchases and stuff we waste money on...The wife and I havent taken a vacation in a while. Philly is far from the tropics...but they make a halfway decent cheesesteak. j/k. I really can't see myself spending a hundo for me and the wife to get to see this 2 days early, a small popcorn each, and a poster. I just bought back one of my Yugo SKSs.
It was neglected but still 100% mechanical. Now my issue. I have M44 Mosin carbine (my present trunk gun) Hi-Point 995 carbine Norinco SKS w/folding stock Yugo SKS My carry pistol is a Taurus PT92 9mm. Should I take the Hi-Point 995 since it's also 9mm. Or one of the SKSs. And should it replace the Mosin or supplement it. Also what is your trunk/get home gun? Thanks now for your advice.

This is a place for everyone to post what they believe to be good deals they've found on the internet.
Its great to find a good deal and even better when you can pass that info on to your friends. http://www.palmettostatearmory.com/2276.php I believe this rifle kit is a good deal. Its a complete AR-15 midlength w/ adjustable stock, flat top upper and a stainless .223 Wylde barrel. $499.99 plus shipping and handling. All you have to provide is a stripped lower. Feel free to share links and info on other kinds of survival gear and weapons you've found.

In your personal opinion what features make for a good home defense shotgun?
I'm not looking for opinions on what would make for a good all around shotgun or a zombie slaying shotgun. Specific features that make for a good weapon to defend yourself when you're at home. I'd also like to know if a shotgun would be your first choice for home defense. If not what firearm do you believe makes for a better choice.

First of all i only get like 6 1/2 hours of sleep per day-sycle because of my current situation, so i / this might seem a bit off edge or so, so don't be to harch on this, please.
What about friends and non-friends that know you prep when S.H.T.F.? I don't have many real friends, but a lot of people know that i prep or at least know i own multiple rifles. Even people who used to be friends but turned hostile for financial or dominantial reasons, still know where i live and where i keep all the gear and stash- and bug-out bags. We all know that "the human" will alter in personality when it's trying to stay alive. If a mob of people who were unwilling to prepare make there way here in a crisis, i might not even make it out of my own house alive. What can i / we do to avoid this?

As some of you have probably heard, I've found it beneficial to start learning long range shooting/ precision rifle.
In last couple months I've learned a lot before evening getting to send a round down range, and what I've found is after a bunch of dime drills and a quick sight in, it'll be a while once again before I'm shooting. Behind the gun a lot more, shooting much less. One thing I've learned is this is not a "budget" (inexpensive) thing to get in to. My gear would be considered low end compared to the average, but is decent for beginning. My costs are still climbing... Just trying to rally the troops, see how much of a presence precision shooting has here, and see if there are some people active, practiced, and there to help myself and others get the shots we want. Who does it, how, and any methods you used to start or cut costs?

originally built for 2nd line troops in ww2 the little carbine saw action thru the early part of vietnam. While sturdy and capable of rough use it was put on the chopping block in the mid 1950'S. Replaced by the m-16 suplies of surplus cut rate carbines are all but gone. Also the huge amount of cheap military surplus ammo has dried up as well. All that is available for ammo is chinese ball import that is a poor performer. You can handload 110gr expanding tip round for it if you have the skills.
Good points: high firepower magazine fed capable of sustained fire, easy to clean and maintain Bad points: you can get an ak-47 for half the price, or an ar-15 for about the same money, both are far better weapons.ammo is harder to find than 40 years ago

Here's another fun little educational diversion, whose inspiration comes from the Chuck Hawks website:
If you had a strict budget of $1000 dollars to spend on a Designated Marksman's-type Rifle, how would you set it up? You need to purchase: A) A rifle, chambered in an appropriate cartridge caliber (minimum .243 Win), B) Optics and mounting hardware, C) Any additional accessories necessary to make the rifle serviceable (sling, bipod, camouflaging, rangefinder, etc), Like the last contest/questionaire, all rifles must be new or "like new" condition. Active links must be provided to each item. However, sales tax and shipping, if applicable, are NOT to be included in the total. You may only use links to currently available or backorderable items; as we all know, prices have changed sometimes significantly over the last few years, yet links still exist to pricing of these items. Again, current pricing only. Oh, and assume that you can't borrow parts from stuff already in your own or another person's collection. This includes ammunition, or scopes, or whatever. Level playing field.
