The Square Formation
Jul 16 2008, 1:55 AM EDT
from my prior knowledge when Max Brooks used the "Square Formation" it was a group of Army personnel who were Shoulder-to-Shoulder attacking whatever zombies are in their L.O.S not 4 team members so if you ave a large enough group to be able to do this in shifts then as long as you don't run out of supplies, tire out, or miss head shots then your group could survive indefintley

Here's a hint- You ain't Chesty. And a freebie while I'm at it: Teh Box formations is ancient history, and Max BROOKES is a comediane, not a disaster specialisit. Do you find this valuable? |

Yeah, if when Z-Day comes, you take Max Brookes word as law, stay away from me and my group. Reddson is right, Maxie is a comedian. While is book may have brought a some good ideas, it was meant to be a joke and if anyone takes anything he says in there as more than MAYBE good ways to die easily, your not going to make it far in post Z-Day.

This would work using full body square shields and long pikes, but luckily we passed the bronze age a while ago.Nice suggestion from the guide that will bring the average person to a level of decent zombie awareness. You can't bash everything in it, but somethings are just impractical. I think it is better to post something and be bashed rather than not post anythign at all. That way you can learn why things don't work, so you can create things that will work. Just a little message to get anyone who might be discouraged by these responces to post. "This would work using full body square shields and long pikes, but luckily we passed the bronze age a while ago.Haha. Yeah, Spray, you have a point. I guess I should consider what I say, because I'd hate for the next great thinker to be discouraged by a simple, albeit bad, critique. (Reddson, I meant my comment, not yours :D) Do you find this valuable? |

Wedge beats square. Wedge allows movement in any direction, and supply to come up from behind. Further, it allows easier Command and Control of the unit.A box formation (Phalanx) worked great for the Greeks and Romans, but back then, ammo resupply consisted of spears. Bullets don't last forever, and you have to ensure that the team is not all blasting through magazines at the same time. One thing that would cause a lot of deaths would be too many people reloading at the same time. It takes a person without training about 10-15 seconds to drop mag, get out a new one, and reload. Add stress to that, and you can tack on another ten seconds for clumsy hands and overall tweaking. So you need to get your teams on track with eachother, so that they can learn how to mask their fires for the most effective cover. Do you find this valuable? |

Also the square formation is only a last ditch effort and is completly defensive not offensive

"Also the square formation is only a last ditch effort and is completly defensive not offensive"Alright, that's diffrent. But if you're in a position where a square is useful to you, you're in a position that those new vest I added to Professional Gear page are now useful to you. Do you find this valuable? |

"BTW those vests lok useful i would love for someone to make a page on how to make them"Hamas. They make the damned things like candy. Of course, they rig them up with Gameboys for detonators, not exactly ideal for skin job killing, but you get the idea. Do you find this valuable? |

I know you all call it the square formation, but when I look at it I see the diamond formation. Mobile an mainly used as the tail end charlie of a squad. An as for the limited vision thing the old saying " rest your head, rest in peace" comes to mind. Yes I understand tunnel vision will happen. but training helps prevent that. You would not want to do that at ft. shermans old jotc courses. Stop scanning on one of those trails an you might end up with a rock tied to a stick in your groin. You would have anyway but one less is a bonus.

If you had a lot, and i mean a LOT of ammo in the middle and people refilling and taking places and watches and shifts, it might work. but getting yourself closed in is ALWAYS a bad idea.
